KEY VOCABULARY
- arabesque - Literally, “Arablike.” A flowing, intricate pattern derived from stylized organic motifs, usually floral, often arranged in symmetrical palmette designs; generally, an Islamic decorative motif.
- avlu - A courtyard forming a summer extension of the mosque and surrounded by porticoes formed by domed squares.
- caliph - Muslim rulers, regarded as successors of Muhammad.
- cuerda seca - A type of polychrome tilework used in decorating Islamic buildings.
- Hijra - The flight of Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in A.D. 622, the year from which Islam dates its beginnings.
- imam - In Islam, the leader of collective worship.
- iwan - In Islamic architecture, a vaulted rectangular recess opening onto a courtyard.
- jihad - In Islam, holy war, death in which assures a faithful Muslim of the reward of Paradise.
- Kaaba - From the Arabic word for “cube.” A small cubical building in Mecca, the Muslim world’s symbolic center.
- kufic - An early form of the Arabic alphabet.
- madrasa - An Islamic theological college adjoining and often containing a mosque.
- maqsura - In some mosques, a screened area in front of the mihrab that was reserved for a ruler.
- mihrab - A semi-circular niche set into the qibla wall of an Islamic mosque.
- minaret - A distinctive feature of Islamic mosque architecture, a tower from which the muezzin calls the faithful to worship.
- minbar - In a mosque, the pulpit on which an imam stands.
- mosque - An Islamic religious building.
- mullah - An Islamic teacher.
- qibla - In the Muslim religion, the direction (towards Mecca) the faithful turn when praying.
- Quran - Islam’s sacred book, composed of surahs (chapters) divided into verses.
- saz - An Ottoman Turkish design of sinuous curved leaves and blossoms.
- Shiites - Muslims who believe that only direct descendants of the Prophet Muhammad are qualified for the highest political and religious leadership.
